Service Description

In today’s society, we place an overwhelming value on visual media, whether it’s movies, television, or social media. As a result, the typical dental patient now has a heightened level of perception for irregularities in smile esthetics. Some of these anterior esthetic discrepancies, such as deviations in dental midline, gingival exposure, crown shape, and incisor display have become more noticeable by the average patient. In fact, we have data that identifies specific threshold levels at which these esthetic abnormalities become detectable. Why is this important? A patient’s esthetic perception directly influences how we treatment plan. Therefore, it’s important to understand which esthetic discrepancies may be more noticeable than others and whether the patient considers them unesthetic. This presentation will identify the threshold levels at which several common anterior esthetic concerns become noticeable by both dental professionals and lay people. It will also highlight the importance of understanding what our patients see and how this impacts the final treatment plan. Learning Objectives: -Understand the impact that a patient’s esthetic perception has on planning and sequencing treatment -Identify threshold levels at which eight common anterior esthetic discrepancies become noticeable
